Apple's Self Service repair program that launched in April is now available for all M1 MacBooks. The service previously only sold guides and parts for the newest iPhones, but now customers have more options for repairing their computers.

Starting today, August 23, customers will be able to purchase replacement parts, tools, and repair guides for the M1 MacBook Air, M1 13-inch MacBook Pro, and 14-and-16-inch MacBook Pros. Rental kits will be available at $49 a week, shipped for free to the customer. Currently, there are no parts or guides for the newest M2 MacBooks and the M1 iMac. Apple says they plan to add more Macs to the program later this year.

Customers can purchase and replace parts like the audio subsystem, battery, display, logic board, top and bottom case, keycaps, Touch ID, and more.

While this is a huge step in the right direction, the program isn't available to owners of Macs that actually need repair more– older Intel Macs. Additionally, it is beyond irritating to have to replace the entire logic board just to upgrade your computer's SSD or RAM. Still, it's great to see Apple encouraging customers to repair their devices more, especially given Apple's track record with anti-repair practices.
