Tech company Honeywell plans to roll out a new technology that could help drastically increase the supply of lower-carbon aviation fuel produced from ethanol, this announcement comes days after the Biden administration calls for the aviation industry to reduce emissions.
This new technology can help increase the production efficiency of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to lower costs, aviation fuel has long been considered the most difficult to decarbonize as it's not easy to find suitable replacements.
"As demand for SAF has increased, we've been looking at different ways to make more SAF economically that people can adopt and adapt at large-scale and produce to displace significant fractions of the jet and diesel pools," - Kevin O'Neil, senior business leader for renewable fuels at Honeywell.
Honeywell says that its technology will help cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% on a total lifecycle basis but it depends on the type of ethanol feedstock used.
SAF plants that will be using Honeywell's technology will be modularized offsite which will help enable lower costs and faster and less labor-intensive installation, this approach will help allow producers to build new SAF capacity just over a year faster compared to average construction.
