The Sunshine Protection Act, or S.623, passed the Senate on Tuesday unanimously. This bill is now being introduced in the House of Representatives as H.R. 69 by representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL-16). The main sponsors of the bill are Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Vern Buchanan, and include many co-sponsors from both political parties.
The bipartisan proposal, if passed in the House of Representatives, and signed in the White House, would make Daylight Savings Time permanent all-year-round, even during the Winter. This will not take place however until starting in November 2023, giving transportation agencies time to adjust their schedules to the change. Senator Rubio has noted that there are many benefits to Daylight Savings, such as reduced crime, more economic activity, conserving energy, and having more time for activities after students and workers get home. Regardless, the bill does raise some concerns as sunrise will occur later in the mornings. This may cause some kids to wait for their buses in darker environments, raising safety concerns as one parent noted.
