Apple has at least two globally livestreamed events each year. One is in June, announcing new software and sometimes Macs. The other is in September, where the fruit company announces the next iPhone, Apple Watch, and more. I'll lay out what you should expect to see revealed in a month from Apple.
The iPhone 15 Series
Apple has released four iPhones for the past three generations. The 12 series had the 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. The 13 series was the same. Last year, the 14 series had swapped out the mini for a "Plus," essentially a larger version of the base 14. The lineup is looking to be very similar for the 15 series, however there is a chance the "Pro Max" moniker could be dropped in favor of the "Ultra" title. If this name change does turn out to be true, there definitely should be something that the alleged "Ultra" has to make it different enough from the "Pro." The colors will change again, with rumored Dark Pink, Light Blue, and Mint Green options for the 15 (Plus), and the Pro iPhones could recieve a dark red color. Every model might recieve the matte glass this year, unlike it being reserved for the Pros since the 11. Of course, Black (Midnight), White (Starlight), Gold (Pro Only), and Product Red (base only) will return once again.
One of the most notable possible hardware changes include swapping out the Lightning port for USB-C, a welcome change. This would multiply data transfer speeds by 10 with the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3. Android phones have used the USB-C port for many years, so Apple might finally catch up to them. Another possible hardware change is adding the Dynamic Island, a Pro only feature last year, to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. The Pro iPhones this year might now have a titanium frame, reminiscent of the Apple Watch Ultra of 2022. Some leaks have stated that the edges of the phone where the glass meets the frame may become more curved, and the display bezels may shrink. Early on in the rumor cycle this year was the idea that the buttons, volume and power, would be swapped out for haptic buttons, like the Home Button on the iPhone 7 and later and Mac trackpads. This has been nearly completely busted, as most other leaks have proven the iPhone 15s will once again have physical buttons. It may, however, have a single long volume rocker. There may also be an "action button" similar to the Apple Watch Ultra for photos and the like. This would replace the mute switch, a staple of the iPhone since the beginning.
Much like last year with the 13 and 14, the iPhone 15 (Plus) will recieve the A16 Bionic chip found in the 14 Pro, and the 15 Pro (Max) will get a brand new A17 processor. Also like last year, only the Pro phones will have a 120hz "ProMotion" display. This is a feature given only to "Pro" devices like the MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and MacBook Pro. Don't expect the base iPhone to recieve ProMotion, at least not for many years. With the risk of sounding like a broken record, repeating last year's trends the iPhone 15 (Plus) will have two cameras, the same as last year. The iPhone 15 Pros will have the third camera, with a much improved main sensor, and a new Periscope zoom lens.
Everything Else
The Apple Watch Series 9 is expected to come out this year with very minimal differences to the Series 8 and Series 7. It is expected to have the same chassis, display, and sensors, just with a faster processor. The S9 processor is the first big jump in performance since the S6 with the Series 6 watch. This should result in the watch being snappier and improved battery performance. It is rumored to have the same colors as last year, with the addition of a pink offering. There is also some talk of an Apple Watch Ultra 2, but there isn't too much information on it. It'll have a new black titanium option, as opposed to only raw titanium. It'll also have the S9, with the same benefits as previously noted. The chassis might be 3D-Printed this year, but that should not be noticable to the end user. This change would cut production costs, making the watch possibly cheaper.
There is a small possibility for an iPad mini 7 to be announced this year, replacing the newly-redesigned mini 6 from 2021. The difference would be only in performace, since the design was just updated. It could gain the A17 chip that will be found in the iPhone 15 Pro, but an A16 is more likely. That's about it for Apple's September 2023 event. There is more to come from Apple this year, such as a new iMac later on (possibly November).
All that's set in stone for this event is a line of new iPhones and a few new Apple Watches. Those have been announced at every September Event for a few years. Of course, as with any August, do not buy an iPhone or Apple Watch unless you're getting a ludicrous discount. If you really want an iPhone 14 right now and aren't considering an iPhone 15, you can still get it for $100 cheaper in a month. And if you just want the latest and greatest, don't get an iPhone 14 Pro (Max)! In a month they'll be replaced with the 15 series equivalents. You're getting ripped off if you're buying an iPhone or Apple Watch in August.
